Mathieu et Romain Evrad ont sauvé la vie d’une Verquinoise dépressive qui voulait se jeter sous le train au passage à niveau de Verquigneul.
Mathieu and Romain Evrad have saved the life of a depressive woman who wanted to commit suicide at a level crossing in their village.
Depuis samedi 19 novembre, Romain et Mathieu Evrard sont les héros du village. Les deux enfants, originaires de Verquigneul, ont sauvé la vie d’une femme qui voulait attenter à ses jours sur les rails.
Since Saturday 19th November Romain and Mathieu Evrard, two brothers are seen as heroes in their village in the North part of France. Both kids native from the village of Verquigneul saved the life of a woman who wanted to commit suicide on the tracks.
Romain, 11 ans, et Mathieu, 13 ans, ont la franchise des enfants de leur âge.
Ils se souviennent mot pour mot du court entretien qu’ils ont eu avec une dame à vélo qui voulait se jeter sur les rails au passage à niveau, rue de Noeux.
Romain 11 years old and Mathieu 13 years, young and frank, remember word by word the short talk they had with a lady riding a bicycle who wanted to jump on the tracks at the level crossing, rue de Noeux.
“Ça veut dire quoi, se suicider ? » a demandé Romain ce jour-là. Il était accompagné de son frère, Mathieu, de deux ans son aîné. Mathieu lui a expliqué. Deux semaines plus tard, Romain s’étonne encore de cette découverte. Ses yeux s’agrandissent. Il lève les sourcils, incrédule. C’est une drôle de façon d’aborder un sujet aussi sérieux. Surtout à cet âge, où la mort n’est perçue qu’au travers des personnages aux multiples vies dans des jeux vidéos.
“What does it mean commit suicide?” asked Romain the youngest boy to his brother on that day. He was accompanied by his two-year-older brother Mathieu. Mathieu explained the word to his younger brother. Two weeks later, Romain is still wondering about this experience and the discovering of this word! He still doesn’t believe what happened. This is a strange way of discovering death for a young kid. Nowadays at this age kids discover death through video games where characters have multiple lives, die, and live again.
« Les enfants ne vont jamais de ce côté-là », explique leur mère. Ils avaient une mission pour l’école qui leur tenait à coeur. Romain et Mathieu montrent fièrement une feuille complète de signatures apposées dans les cases vendues.
“My kids usually never go to that area” says their mother. But on that particular day they had a mission for their school that was important to them. They had to sell lottery coupons. Romain and Mathieu proudly show how many coupons they have already sold.

Guy Clarebout et sa coéquipière étaient en patrouille ce samedi 19 novembre. Les fonctionnaires de police du commissariat de Béthune étaient en train d’effectuer un contrôle de véhicule lorsque les enfants se sont approchés d’eux.
Guy Clarebout and his colleague were patrolling on that 19th November. Both police officers were controlling a vehicle when the kids approached the police forces.
« J’étais occupé à vérifier les papiers d’une fourgonnette quand j’ai entendu les enfants parler à ma coéquipière. J’ai aussitôt compris que c’était sérieux.» explique Guy Clarebout.
“I was controlling the papers of a van when I saw the kids talking to my colleague. I immediately understood that it was serious” explained Guy Clarebout.
Romain et Mathieu ont expliqué qu’ils vendaient des cases. Ils ont rencontré une dame qui pleurait. Elle était à proximité de la voie ferrée. « Bonjour… on vend des cases pour l’école… pour gagner une boîte de chocolat », expliquent-ils à la dame.
« Je vais faire une exception, répond la dame, c’est la dernière chose que je ferai de bien car je vais me jeter sous le train ». « Si je gagne, tu pourras garder les chocolats », ajoute-t-elle. Elle leur explique, en larmes, qu’elle est en train d’écrire une lettre d’adieu qu’elle déposera dans son panier sur son vélo. »
Romain and Mathieu explained that they were selling lottery coupons, they met a lady who was crying standing near the tracks at the level crossing. “Hello we are selling lottery coupons, do you want any? You may win chocolates!“ they said to that woman. « I will make an exception” she answered, “this is the last good thing I will do because I will jump on the tracks when the train comes. If I win you may keep the chocolates then» she added crying and explaining that she was writing a good bye letter to her family that she would put into the basket on her bicycle.”
Mathieu et Romain sont sous le choc. Ils rentrent en direction de leur maison avec ce poids sur les épaules, se demandant ce qu’ils doivent faire. En chemin ils rencontrent une patrouille de police à laquelle ils racontent tout.
Mathieu and Romain are chocked and go back home with this terrible thinking: what should be do? Fortunately on their way home they meet a police patrol making controls. They decide to tell everything.
Nous avons aussitôt patrouillé dans le secteur avec les éléments que nous avions recueillis pour localiser cette dame. Nous nous sommes dirigés au passage à niveau de la rue du Pont avant de la localiser rue de Noeux.
The police immediately patrolled in the geographical area described by the kids (the police forces were not from the village where the kids were living but from the main city nearby, they did not know perfectly the surroundings). They went to the level crossing rue de Noeux.
Les enfants ont été d’un précieux secours. Ils nous ont donné une description physique de la personne mais aussi la couleur du vélo équipé d’un panier. Le signalement était précis, si bien que lorsque nous l’avons rencontrée nous ne pouvions nous tromper.
Nous avons demandé du renfort. Dans l’attente, il fallait négocier. Elle était nerveuse et pleurait. Elle nous a reproché de ne jamais être là quand il fallait et nous a demandé de la laisser tranquille. À l’instant même où les barrières se baissaient, nous avons tenté de la retenir. Elle s’est débattue. C’était in extremis ».
“The geographical elements and the physical description of that lady (even the color of her bicycle with a basket) given by the kids were really accurate and precious for the policemen and determining in that urgent case. We found her immediately. In the meantime we had to negotiate and talk. She was very nervous and crying. She wanted to be alone. Then the barriers started to get down, we grabbed her, she did not want to be prevented, we saved her in extremis.”
Guy Clarebout et sa coéquipière ont continué leur journée en pensant aux enfants. Et si Romain et Mathieu n’avaient pas pris la bonne décision de leur parler… L’histoire de ces deux enfants a fait le tour du commissariat. La famille a été contactée, les enfants, félicités.
Guy Clarebout and his colleague continued working that day thinking of the kids. If Romain and Mathieu had not taken the right decision at the right moment …. The story of these two kids have been told to every policeman at the police station. The family has been contacted and the kids congratulated.
Le lundi, Romain a raconté son aventure à son professeur. « Il ne voulait pas me croire, il m’a dit : “je veux des preuves”… Mais il va voir le journal ».
On Monday Romain told the whole story to his teacher who did not want to believe him. Then he discovered an article in the local newspaper !
Depuis, les enfants ont tourné la page. Ils ont repris leurs habitudes et attendent avec impatience Noël.
Since then kids have gone back to their favourite occupations: football etc…and think about the wonderful presents they might have for Christmas!

An elephant in Poland???How comes? No you are not dreaming, this is the mascot “Aban” chosen by PKP P.L.K. for their awareness campaign on level crossing safety in the framework of ILCAD.
They distributed safety leaflets in schools and at level crossings. Videos and safety messages were shown in the 5 main railway stations of Buenos Aires.
They published the ILCAD video « Just in time” on the national tv and messages of prevention related to ILCAD on 9 June 2011 on the main radio stations.
