OPERATION LIFESAVER CANADA CONGRATULATES TWO CANADIAN WINNERS

Canadian children win prizes in ILCAD rail safety drawing contest: http://www.operationlifesaver.ca/general/2013/04/canadian-children-win-prizes-in-ilcad-rail-safety-drawing-contest/

Two young Canadians recently won honours for their rail safety knowledge in ILCAD’s third annual international drawing contest for children.

More than 500 entries were submitted for the contest by children around the world. After the almost 2000 public votes were tallied, the top ten drawings in each category were recently announced. Among the winners were two Canadian children.

Four-year-old Mia Cinquino of Saint-Constant, Québec won second prize in the age 4 – 7 category. Mia’s  mother says Mia drew her picture because her grandfather worked for Canadian railways for most of his life.

In the 8 – 12 age group, eight-year-old Allen Zhou from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, won tenth prize for his depiction of motorists waiting safely at a level crossing with double tracks.

 Congratulations Mia and Allen!

All of the winning drawings are displayed on the ILCAD website and will be used during the ILCAD 2013 campaign. They will also be exhibited at the United Nations in Geneva during the second UN Global Road Safety Week (May 6 – 12, 2013).

This contest helps to raise awareness about the risks for both pedestrians and motorists at level crossings. It is part of the International Union of Railways’ (UIC) efforts to encourage people to “Act safely at level crossings,” the motto for International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD).

More than 40 countries, including Canada, will participate in ILCAD 2013 on May 7th to help educate people about rail safety. Why not share the winning drawings with the children in your life and encourage them to create their own?

Do your part to keep the rail-safety message top of mind for everyone, because playing around trains can be deadly.

Save the date for the 5th edition of ILCAD: 7 may 2013

Since 2009, the UIC has been coordinating the International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) campaign running under the motto “Act safely at level crossings”. The UIC, representing the railway community worldwide, has been working with a small but growing number of road sector organizations, the European Commission and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), in order to raise awareness among road users and pedestrians of the risks at level crossings and to change their behaviour. More than 40 countries around the world were engaged in ILCAD 2012.

This campaign proceeds from an uncomfortable statistic: too many people die or are injured in accidents at level crossings. However, though the majority of these are due to misuse by motorists and pedestrians, the popular misconception is that these accidents are a railway problem. Conferences on the issue show that the only really effective way to decrease the number of accidents, short of closing all level crossings, is education, highlighting the risks and making people aware of the potential consequences if they do not follow the simple rules of the road.

As requested by the United Nations General Assembly, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations regional commissions are organizing the second Global UN Road Safety Week to raise global, regional, national and local awareness about Road Safety issues, with particular attention to pedestrians. This will take place worldwide in each UN region from 6 to 12 May 2013.

Following the enthusiasm shown by many ILCAD partners to join the Global United Nations Road Safety Week it has been decided to organise ILCAD 2013 during that particular week. Among other events taking place at UNECE in Geneva that week, the 7th May should be dedicated to ILCAD 2013.  This will include a round table with representatives from rail- and road safety specialists and authorities, education-, human behaviour and enforcement specialists, UNECE member states, the EC, together with an exhibition to display ILCAD partners’ activities. ILCAD partners may organise their own events on 7th May or during the whole week in their respective country.

Building on the successes of the 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012, the ILCAD 2013 (International Level Crossing Awareness Day) will then focus on the principle date:
7 May 2013.

You may join free of charge as all activity is on a purely collaborative basis and help the railway community to reduce this level of operational risk that we face at the interface with the road sector.

In addition to the second drawing contest for children on level crossing safety (more than 400 drawings received). UIC dediced this year to issue an educational video and posters with children, because they are our future!

Who can you more and best educate than kids! And kids may even educate adults, their own parents or other kids on the danger at and around railway tracks and level crossings. PLEASE JOIN US. We are all good wills to save lives, no matter the country, no matter the language, no matter the culture.

Please see our POSTERS http://www.flickr.com/photos/79729681@N04/

and our new video that exists in 5 versions : one with 4 children in English. It exists also in English with one child, in French, in Spanish and in Serbian.

The kids were great, we spent the whole day on Saturday early May with them. They had real fun in a park in the morning to play with a fake train and fake level crossing. Then we brought them to a real level crossing, and they had to be patient, cautious and respect traffic rules. Then they repeated the motto in their language: English, Spanish, French and Serbian, their parents working at UIC. The little boy on the left drew the locomotive he used in the film.
